“I just want to start by saying that the accommodation team really do try to get people to meet and socialise with each other. They put on events and they seem to want that community feeling, but I also think they are not always open to everyone, and that makes it awkward when there is something going on and you do not feel like you should join in. For instance, the accommodation team suggested a pizza event this week, and they also mentioned a morning where you can go and get a free breakfast, which they list as a pastry. I have dietary requirements, and honestly I already feel like there is no way I can attend and get something suitable, because it is not made clear in the advert. It would be great if they put more effort into making sure everyone is included, but I think they need to advertise that properly as part of the events. If it is not stated, I am not even going to bother trying, because I know I would end up feeling left out if I cannot be catered for. Another way they could help people connect with their flatmates is to do more straightforward socials, like an undergrad social or a postgrad social, and also encourage mixing between different courses so people can find out what others are studying. I get that it can be hard and take a lot of effort, but it is usually the easiest way to find common ground with someone at university if you are on the same course. So I genuinely think mixing undergrad and postgrad socials is the simplest way to do that.”
