“I’ve noticed the social side of it and how much it can affect that sense of community. In my friends’ place, the flatmates can be quite unsociable or avoidant sometimes, especially when you compare it to other flats where everyone talks and socialises together. That difference can really feel isolating for them. I’d rather accommodations were matched based on personality and interests, and also on language skills. For example, some people’s flatmates don’t speak very good English, so they end up avoiding communication. That can make sense, but it can also make day to day living more difficult. It also tends to leave you feeling lonelier and even more homesick.”
